Britain’s prime minister to chair his final Cabinet meeting
May, 59, is one of the most experienced ministers in Cameron’s Cabinet, serving for six years in the notoriously hard job of home secretary, akin to the interior minister’s post in other countries. Having herself campaigned – albeit not very vigorously – for Britain to remain in the European Union, she now has to reunite her party, which is split over Europe.

David Cameron has gone out not with a bang, nor a whimper, but a mystery tune. By late afternoon, Cameron announced May would be moving into 10 Downing Street within 48 hours. Some thought they detected a hint of “The West Wing” theme tune. “Because Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it”.
Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will step down on Wednesday and May will immediately replace him.
Speaking in Downing Street, Mr Cameron hailed his successor, who becomes the Conservatives’ second woman Prime Minister, as “strong and competent”.
She will sit with Cameron Wednesday (July 13) at his final Prime Minister’s Question Time, before he is driven to Buckingham Palace to formally resign to Queen Elizabeth II.
But with Leadsom’s withdrawal, the party announced May would be the new leader “with immediate effect”. “On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s questions”, Cameron told reporters Monday outside 10 Downing Street.
The queen has the formal role of appointing the new leader. On John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver , he has poked at the whole Brexit fiasco that has caused a lot of problems in Great Britain.
He said that the “sooner we can sort out this problematic situation the better”. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. The monarch will then invite May – as leader of a party with a majority in Parliament – to lead a new government.
He did not suggest re-opening the contest, saying May is now the only contender.
At the launch of her – suddenly shortened – campaign for leadership, in Birmingham Monday (July 11) she gave several clues as to her priorities. The vote has unsettled the markets and sent the value of the pound plunging.
On Monday morning, there were two candidates to lead the governing Conservative Party.
“She’d have to really mess it up not to win”, he said. She says the country needs certainty, not a nine-week leadership race.
In a speech flanked by dozens of Conservative MPs, May, the home secretary since 2010, praised Cameron for his stewardship of the Tory party and the country. If so, May could be prime minister within days.
Leadsom’s decision to quit came after the weekend uproar over her comments about the role of motherhood in politics.
It will not be an easy start for Theresa May when she does take over on Wednesday. “The idea that she is going to be able to satisfy everybody I think is far-fetched”. She has a reputation for solid, unflashy competence and for prevailing over her rivals.
May favored the “Remain” side during last month’s referendum campaign.
Her most urgent need is to put together a top team.
The leadership battle has turned bitter, and risks splitting the century-old party in two. Eagle said he “doesn’t connect enough to win an election”.
