Mr Mann added: “This caused the plane to hit the runway at an angle”. “The aircraft skidded on the left engine nacelle and wingtip before coming to rest on the runway”.

Images posted to Twitter show the plane tipped over onto its left side, where the undercarriage collapsed.

All 94 passengers were removed safely from the flight from Port Elizabeth.

The pilot said after we landed that the left landing gear had broken off. I think he did well to keep it on the runway.

Emergency crews were called to help a British Airways flight after its landing gear collapsed soon after touching down in Johannesburg.

Everyone seems to be fine.

‘We were met by fire and rescue operation who continued to spray the plane and we then disembarked via an emergency stairscase’.

Comair – the company controlling the South African BA franchise as well as low-priced flyer Kulula – have spoken to The Citizen and, in a statement, said: “We can confirm that all passengers and crew safely disembarked with no reported injuries”.

“The incident involving a Boeing 737-400, registration ZS-OAA experienced a failure with the landing gear shortly after touching down”.

Earlier, Comair said it and the relevant authorities would conduct an investigation into what caused the gear failure.
