Reports say there were around 20 people at the property at the time and the parents of the boy were having dinner with friends while children played at the rear of the house.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the life-saving efforts failed.

A teenage boy alerted adults, with a parent attempting to revive the child before paramedics arrived at the villa in the Mijas Golf resort in Las Lagunas, Mijas.

Situated on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola, it is a popular destination for British tourists and expats.

A judge has been placed in charge of an investigation into the incident.

A Overseas Workplace spokesman stated: “We will affirm the dying of a British nationwide in Spain on August 16”. A post-mortem was due to take place in Malaga on Monday morning.

“The child, a four-year-old, went into the swimming pool and could not swim, and he has died”, he added. In the house there is a swimming pool. “We’re in with native authorities and have offered the household with recommendation on bereavement overseas, together with repatriation”.
