British citizens ‘may need visas to travel through Europe’

If this scheme were to become legislation it would apply to all visitors to the 26-nation Schengen zone – which Britain is not a member – from countries that do not require a visa to enter.

But, speaking to the BBC’s Andrew Marr programme, she said: “It’s a reminder that this is a two-way negotiation”.

At present, Britons can travel freely in the 26-nation Schengen zone, which includes France, Spain, Italy and Germany but not the United Kingdom, if they show passports.

“First of all, it’s going to be reciprocal, we are going to have to work out what’s in the UK’s interests as well going to the European Union and what works for our economy and making sure that we get the right balance”.

Rudd, who’s responsible for immigration policy, said she’s committed to the government’s target of reducing annual net migration from more than 300,000 people to less than 100,000, but didn’t give any details about how that would be achieved.

Ms Rudd said it was a “given” people voted Leave to reduce immigration.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has rejected a “points-based” system to screen immigrants, setting up a potential conflict with Brexit campaigners in her government who promised to bring in Australian-style controls over European Union migrants.

More than 17.4 million Britons said the country should leave the bloc, as just over 16.14 million others favored remaining in the EU.

“She is very clear that we are all focused in the same direction and we are all going to deliver on what she has asked us to do”.

“I’m aware that it is not easy but I still hope you will be ready to start the process as soon as possible”, he said.
