British Labour polls close but no one feels triumphant

Jeremy Corbyn is “unelectable” and Labour has never been further from power since the 1930s, former South Shields MP David Miliband has warned. The half-hearted message about Europe is a betrayal of millions of working people.

According to Reuters, Owen Smith, the Labour lawmaker challenging Corbyn to the leadership, “looks set to lose”.

As the polls closed, Mr Smith released a statement which said: “I’m incredibly grateful to all of the Labour members, supporters and trade unionists who have voted for me in this election”.

“That is only half the story”.

“But I will do what I’ve always done, which is be Labour, vote Labour, loyally serve this party and make sure from the backbenches I continue to make the arguments I’ve made during this campaign, in order to get Labour seen once more as credible, get us back on the front foot and get us back into power”.

Mr Murray explained that reinstating elections to the shadow cabinet, which were abolished by Labour MPs under the leadership of Ed Miliband in 2011, could act as an “olive branch” to win over colleagues at Westminster, who have been critical of the veteran left-winger, and that he should “grab it with both hands”.

In September 2015 Jeremy Corbyn won the most convincing mandate any Labour leader has every got.

“Anti-austerity speeches can not explain everything; corporate taxation can not pay for everything”.

“It doesn’t add up”.

Celebrities such as Eddie Izzard and Ben Elton have attended previous Labour events and it is likely more well-known people could be appearing in Liverpool this year.

Mr Corbyn said: “I have met people from Hamas, Do I agree with them? No”.

Jeremy Corbyn is reassuring; he told the BBC that he has thus far avoided responding to unpleasant remarks during the campaign and wants to “wipe the slate clean”. Corbyn does indeed enjoy popularity among the Labour party members who elect him.

Gavin Callaghan, leader of Basildon Labour group, believes Mr Corbyn’s potential re-election as leader will be “a huge step backwards”.

Mr Corbyn rejected accusations that a report he ordered into anti-Semitism within the party was not thorough enough.

A spokesperson for the Jeremy for Labour campaign said: “Those taking part in the video were expressing their views on the allegations made that as supporters of Jeremy Corbyn they are somehow soft on antisemitism, something which Jeremy Corbyn has a record of campaigning and acting against, and has repeatedly and consistently said he takes extremely seriously and will not tolerate”.

Mr Corbyn is widely expected to hold on to the leadership, despite mass resignations from his frontbench team over the summer.

“Your safety and well-being is of upmost importance to the Labour Party”, said the note.

“I literally laughed”, Mr Mann said.

With many Labour MPs fearing Theresa May could call a snap general election in the coming months, Tom Watson, the party’s deputy leader, had proposed plans for elections to the shadow cabinet as a way of “getting the band back together” and persuading refuseniks to return to the fold.
