“The motive was a misunderstanding”.

Chief of Denpasar Police, Senior Commisaris Hadi Purnomo shows a photograph of the location where DavidTaylor and Sara Connor burnt their clothes in Jimbaran, South Kuta.

‘We took David there, but he couldn’t tell us clearly where the place was, ‘ Mr Purnomo told reporters.

Late last night, police took Connor and Taylor to Jimbaran to find the spot where the evidence was burned.

David Taylor, 33, and his Australian girlfriend Sarah Connor, 45, were arrested last week over the killing.

She claimed she saw the policeman lying face-down on the beach and when she approached to ask him whether he had seen her bag, he bit her on the leg, said Mr Siregar.

Mr Purnomo claimed that Taylor bashed the officer with a mobile phone, yelling at him: “You have stolen the bag, you are a fake police”.

The pair are being held at a police station in Bali’s capital, Denpasar. At that point the fracas began, in the course of which Taylor beat the victim about the head with a large beer bottle.

But Mr Taylor wasn’t finished, bludgeoning Mr Sudarsa twice with a mobile phone. He said it was Connor who took the wallet and also frisked the officer.

“Sara was involved here, she searched him as well”, he said, according to the ABC.

“After the fight was done, he went out on the street, he found his girlfriend on the street and then he’s just said to his girlfriend “the bag has already gone so let’s go back to the hotel”, said Erick Sihombing, Mr Taylor’s lawyer. That’s how the victim’s clothes got unbuttoned and loose. It was not clear why they then took his wallet.

So the couple walked to their nearby hotel, washed the evidence and slept before checking out the next morning.

“There is evidence we have found that allows investigators to declare him a suspect”, said Purnomo of Taylor.

Mr Taylor is being held as a suspect for murder, assault and battery charges.

The murder charge they could face carries a maximum penalty of 15 years, though they could also face lesser charges. He also used the officer’s own binoculars to bash the victim. “As per our client statement, she did nothing that directly caused the death of the victim”.

Connor was interrogated for nine hours and Taylor for 12 hours on Monday during which, police claim, they retracted earlier confused statements and told a new version for how Wayan Sudarsa came to be found bloodied and dead with 17 head wounds.

Mr Purnomo said eventually Mr Taylor smashed the police officer in the head with a bottle, which shattered.

Police also said it was Ms Connor’s idea to destroy the evidence linking her and her boyfriend Mr Taylor to the alleged murder – stashing and burning their clothes in a housing complex and then dumping Mr Sudarsa’s ID cards on the side of the road.

“After Sara received a phone call, they made a decision to go to burn the clothes they wore that night”.
