Earlier last week, the Pentagon announced it had launched a probe into a July 19 airstrike just north of Manbij, which has seen heavy fighting between USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces and Islamic State group fighters for more than six weeks.
Michael Enright was previously accused by other foreign fighters of not being up to the job and was previous year said to have been kicked out of fighting units.
His father, John, posted a statement on social media confirming the death and added: “He was loved and will be missed by all his family and friends”. “He would have been very proud and would have regarded you all as his brothers and sisters”, he added.
Evans was one of many foreign volunteers who have joined the People’s Defence Units (YPG), the Kurdish military force fighting in northern Syria.
Aleppo has been split into rebel- and government-held districts since the country’s cataclysmic civil war began in 2012 and is now being heavily besieged by the government.
“A Kurdish woman fighter went to treat him and tragically both of them were hit by a bomb”.
The Home Office was unable to confirm or deny Evans’ death.
Shirley made a decision to go to the war zone himself, joining the YPG, or Kurdish People’s Protection Units.
A tribute was posted by a YPG-linked YouTube account. “As all United Kingdom consular services there are suspended, it is extremely hard to confirm the status or whereabouts of British nationals in Syria”, a spokesperson said.
“Anyone who does travel to these areas, for whatever reason, is putting themselves in considerable danger”.
Mr Evans died fighting for another strategic town, called Manbij, in north-western Syria. Little else is known about Brit from Reading or his motivations for joining.
