British men killed as their car plunges 300 meters in Austrian

Two Britons killed after their auto plunged more than 1,000ft off an alpine road during a rally highlighted the dangers they faced just days before the tragedy.

A police spokeswoman reportedly said the men’s vehicle went through a guardrail, as reported by Austrian public broadcaster ORF.

Josh’s mum and dad Jenny and Marcus Robinson have paid tribute to their “wonderful son” on Facebook.

The men, aged 22 and 25, had been racing against another auto when their vehicle suddenly skidded to the right, broke through a crash barrier and plummeted 300 metres.

The famous hairpin route is named after Austria’s highest peak, the 12,460ft Grossglockner.

Helicopters were used to recover the bodies of the men who are believed to have been killed immediately, reports The Local newspaper.

He then tried to call them with no response before driving back to their hotel and telling the race organisers, she said.

The mountain pass road is only accessible for six months every year and crosses a glacier in the Austrian Alps.

Although it is a scenic route famed for its spectacular views, it does also attract motorists, particularly motorcyclists who keen to try out the frequent curves. Photos released from the scene of the crash have shown how badly damaged the crushed auto was.
