Chief mouser Larry – a brown and white tabby entrusted with the rat-catching portfolio – will continue to reside in his famous abode when Theresa May moves in after becoming Prime Minister on Wednesday.

He said: “I think David Cameron has done a very good job during some very hard and challenging times”.

Ms May, 59, was the only remaining candidate in the Conservative leadership contest following Andrea Leadsom’s withdrawal on July 11.

“I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so that together we could reach better times”.

Mr Cameron concluded: “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve our country as Prime Minister over these last six years and to serve as leader of my party over 11 years”.

“Mr Speaker”, replied Mr Cameron, “This morning I had meetings with ministerial colleagues and others”.

Mr Cameron thanked him for his “fascinating suggestions” which he said “sound even harder than this one, so I think I’ll pass”. “And then after that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening”.
