Beijing police announced on Thursday that they had issued a yellow security alert to ensure safety during the Christmas period.

The American & British warnings, which have been worded identically, singled out the Sanlitun neighborhood in japanese Beijing, still they gave no details concerning the potential threat.
Following the alert, armed police, commando units and ambulances were deployed in Sanlitun Area.
Police have issued a yellow security alert during the Christmas period, but this is a relatively normal procedure around holidays and does not represent a particularly high threat level.
The alert is general in nature and does not appear to be based on any specific threat targeting Chinese citizens.
Meanwhile, extra police will be patrolling Beijing’s downtown areas including Wangfujin, Nanloguxiang and Sanlitun.
Security was tighter than usual on Thursday, with armed police posted outside Sanlitun’s shops barricades blocking the entrance to roads in embassy districts.
The government blamed that incident on Islamist militants from China’s unruly far western region of Xinjiang, where hundreds have died in unrest in recent years.
Chinese authorities remain anxious about crowd control after last year’s deadly New Year’s stampede in Shanghai killed 36 people.

Though China has been battling terrorists in Xinjiang and several parts of the country, it is rare to receive open threats. And analysts have said global anxiety about terror threats is likely to make the Chinese leadership feel more justified in taking a tough line on the issue.
