The case highlighted white privilege in the U.S. and biased coverage in mainstream media, which focused more on Turner’s clean record than his crime.

Protesters are expected throughout the weekend at Turner’s parents’ house, but cops are just hoping to keep things calm enough where nobody is physically hurt.
Since Turner’s sentencing came to light, groups have been calling for the judge to be held accountable in what Hoffman describes as “a necessary first step toward larger systemic reform”.
Santa Clara County Presiding Judge Rise Pichon said she has granted the request of Judge Aaron Persky. “There’s a lot of reasons to be in protective custody, basically they’re at risk while they’re here”, Smith said. Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown has not said whether he would sign it.
“I think that this really raises the same concern that’s at the heart of the recall campaign, which is how the legal system treats sexual assault and violence against women”, said recall campaign chairwoman Michele Dauber, a Stanford University law professor who is friends with the woman Turner assaulted.
Two graduate students saw Turner assaulting a partially clothed woman behind a trash bin and interrupted the attack. They chased and tackled him when he tried to flee, holding him on the ground until police arrived.
Sandra Pfeiffer was one of a small number of demonstrators who watched Turner leave jail.
“Justice was not served”, Molly Hardin said. “That’s why I’m here”.
Critics argue the sentence minimized sexual assault on college campuses and called attention to inequality in the courts.
Turner leaves the Santa Clara County Jail in San Jose, California. Persky cited “extraordinary circumstances” in following a probation department recommendation and sentencing him to jail. The judge voluntarily removed himself from hearing criminal cases, starting next week. They and others attending a demonstration outside the jail called for him to resign Friday.
Turner hired an expensive attorney and fought the case instead of conceding and apologising, the woman said in the statement, which has been read over 18 million times according to BuzzFeed.
‘In our opinion, Judge Persky is biased and should not be on the bench’. His parole supervision will also take place in OH as well.
Turner is believed to have stayed at a hotel with his mother in Mountain View, California, Friday night.
Sheriff Gene Fischer says his department will send postcards to neighbors of Turner’s parents, telling them that a convicted sex offender is moving in nearby. If he waits longer than 72 hours, he’s required to meet with his probation officer here, since he’ll be on probation for the next three years.
He was released early from jail for good behaviour while incarcerated.

It’s unclear under which tier Turner’s California conviction will fall, but in the letter Turner’s mother wrote to Persky, she indicated his offense could make him eligible for the highest level of supervision, Tier III.
