Brock Turner: When Rape Culture Meets White Privilege
“I completely understand caring about the judge more than him”, said protester Daniel Hardin, of Vandalia, with an M4 assault rifle around his shoulder.

“I believe strongly in judicial independence”. There is no independence where there is bias.
“There was a lot of hate”, she added. But in California, “nonviolent” is broadly defined.
Other neighbors also say they’re uneasy with Turner coming to the community.
And Willingham and Karasek, as outspoken activists who reported their assaults, are not the norm, they noted. The bill (AB 2888) has been criticized as “heavy-handed” by some who advocate on behalf of sexual assault victims and it is opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Brock Turner, 20, left the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose shortly after 6 a.m. PDT (1300 GMT), just three months after he began serving a sentence for assault with intent to commit rape, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.
Judge Persky, who had also been a student at Stanford, now faces a recall campaign and has removed himself from hearing criminal cases.
The other speakers included Senate Pro Tem Kevin De Leon, Rep. Eric Swawell, Rep. Brown hasn’t said whether he will sign.
De Leon spoke to the men in the crowd, telling them that sexual assault “is a man’s issue as well”.
“Judge Persky is biased”, he said.
A mother in the crowd, Jessica Williams, agreed.
Deputy District Attorney Alaleh Kianerci asked for six years, citing Turner’s testimony that the woman appeared to consent to his overtures despite evidence to the contrary, including his statements to police.
“He will be treated no differently than any other sex offender we monitor”, Fischer said.
“But then I realized, it would have happened, just to somebody else”, she said in the letter.
She said he was held in “protective custody” during his incarceration, but her department did not receive any credible threats.
But even for the sexual assaults that are brought to trial, Turner’s stands out as white privilege. “But that doesn’t mean we’re going to forget about him”. A website launched this week by Persky calls for Californians to “support judicial independence”. A campaign to recall him is still in the works.
This week, the judge found herself on the opposite side of the bench as she received her own harsh scolding from Florida’s chief justice.
“I took an oath to uphold the Constitution, not to appease politicians or ideologues”, writes Persky, according to the site. “You need judges like that who are willing to make that big call”.
Despite the outrage of many, Brock Turner was released on Friday after serving only half of his already short prison sentence.

As it turns out, that judge’s gentle interpretation of the law has been countered with another American legal idiosyncrasy – the right to bear arms. “As a judge, I have heard thousands of cases”.
