Broncos LB Brandon Marshall explains why Denver’s defense isn’t ‘dirty’

The Broncos are an aggressive team, and it showed on Thursday night.

But dirty? No way, say the Denver Broncos. “When I think of dirty, I think of stepping on somebody’s ankle at the bottom of a pile (or) twisting somebody around. He’s trying to bring a voice to people that he doesn’t feel have one, and I think we want to do the same thing and try to help”. They have taken a great deal of heat because Newton was not removed from the game and checked for a concussion on Thursday, despite several hard hits to the head.

Just because we hit Cam in the head a couple of times, that doesn’t make us dirty. “There are a lot of dirty players, and that’s not our M.O”. Pointing to players that have more of a reputation for being dirty isn’t exactly a defense of his own actions.

Olsen disagrees with the notion that it’s harder to make calls on Newton because if a big, physical quarterback who runs the ball a lot.

In addition to criticizing the refs’ failure to penalize the Broncos properly, many took issue with the fact Newton continued to play despite looking less than 100 percent.

Marshall could be fined this week for his hit on Newton.

“It didn’t. And that’s fine”. I think even with this, when everybody wants to talk about is this a distraction, what’s going on, it’s been something that I think has been an issue that most people haven’t discussed openly in locker rooms and quite honestly most places.

Although none of the helmet hits on Newton resulted in penalty yardage and none got him checked for a concussion, Marshall said he’s expecting a FedEx letter in his locker Wednesday informing him of a hefty fine. “I leave my coverage just to try to hit him”. Newton ran 11 times against Denver, but Shula would like that average to be about 7 or 8 per game.

“We’re getting called dirty?”

Following his protest of the national anthem, Marshall said he’s simply against social injustice, not those in uniform.

Chief Robert White says he met with Marshall on Tuesday after being approached by Broncos management. “Speed of the game. We’re a malicious group, but we’re not dirty”.

This time, the Broncos’ team featured a completely new face under center as Trevor Siermian began his quest to take over for future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Marshall has faced criticism after he went down on one knee during last week’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers.
