Broncos Name Trevor Siemian Starting Quarterback Over Mark Sanchez, Paxton Lynch

While coach Gary Kubiak didn’t make an official announcement of the team’s starting quarterback after the Broncos 17-9 win over the LA Rams, he reiterated that he has already gathered enough information to make the decision.

June 14: Near the end of organized team activities, Kubiak says Sanchez and Siemian are in a two-man race for the starting job. The Broncos had poor quarterback play past year and still won the Super Bowl, so Siemian at least has a chance to win some games. In three games to this point in the preseason, Siemian has connected on 27 of his 43 pass attempts (62.8 percent) for 285 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The search for a signal caller started in March, when Brock Osweiler inked a four-year, $72 million deal with Houston.

One would think Sanchez would get picked up by someone should he get cut, just not at the price he would command via trade. “But again I wasn’t thinking about that too much”. I can tell by the way he handles the team in the huddle, he’s got control of what’s going on.

The game was the second consecutive time Siemian started for Denver and he delivered.

Siemian was in a battle with Mark Sanchez for the starting spot, and the recent signs had pointed toward him winning the competition.

Unfortunately for Sanchez, he was not able to recover from the game. Last week, the Dallas franchise’ quarterback Tony Romo got sidelined after suffering a back injury during a preseason game. He fumbled twice inside the 15-yard line against San Francisco on August 20.

According to cbssports.com, Sanchez was quoted in saying after the game, “I just squandered a great opportunity to separate myself and I put the team in a bad situation”. “I can’t give any excuse for that poor quarterback gameplay”. As a solution, the team wants Sanchez to take a pay cut.

Siemian will start Denver’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers on September 8 in a championship rematch. His advantage over Sanchez and Lynch would be his knowledge about the Broncos offensive system.

For now, it’s Siemian’s time with the Broncos.

Also, the defense is still a top-level unit in the National Football League, with Super Bowl MVP Von Miller returning. It will be interesting to see how far Siemian and/or the Broncos defense carries them in 2016.
