Broncos Notebook October 7: Team Prepares For Rival Raiders

Del Rio was the Broncos defensive coordinator under John Fox from 2012 through 2014, coming to Denver after defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was hired by the Raiders to be the head coach. The Raiders will look to bottle up the run, make Manning uncomfortable and hope the quarterback throws a few passes up for grabs that their own defenders can get – most notably free safety Charles Woodson. “To be at 18, man, it’s incredible even to me”.

“That’s the way I’ve always played the game from when I was a kid”, Woodson said.

Broncos visiting the “rival” Raiders this week, although it’s been a one sided rivalry recently with the Broncos winning 7 straight dating back to 2011.

The Oakland Raiders host the Denver Broncos in one of the NFL Week 5 games on Sunday, start time at 4:25 PM ET, at O.co Coliseum, Oakland, CA. That means in the first month of the season the Broncos feature two Defensive Players of the Week (Ward and Aqib Talib) and a Player of the Month (DeMarcus Ware). But only Woodson is doing it at a position where he has to dole out hits and run all around the field. “We will need them all, whoever suits up, and they will all play”, Kubiak said.

“Sometimes, as I like to say, these guys are compensated well also”.

Like Woodson, Manning is not quite the same player he was in his prime but he is still quite successful. Kubiak said DE Derek Wolfe, who returned from a four-game suspension this week, should play more than half the snaps Sunday…. Miller, with 24 pressures and two sacks, is the responsibility of Austin Howard, whose play in the last three games has been much improved after a shaky opener. He’s the leader of that defense back there. “It’s a real credit to him”. Woodson has intercepted passes from 40 quarterbacks, but has none in eight career meetings against Manning. “I think all of your division games are”, quarterback Peyton Manning said. “I wish there were a few advantages, but what we’re going to do is get ourselves ready to compete like we do every week and look forward to playing good football”. This week will be no different. “But it would be great to get my hands on one of Peyton’s balls”. No question about it. This is about wins and losses. Rookie Ty Sambrailo was moved from right tackle to left tackle, and veteran Ryan Harris was signed in the spring.
