Broncos say they play hard, not dirty
The NFL has fined Denver Broncos safety Darian Stewart $18,231 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, according to ESPN.

Stewart was flagged by the referees on the play, but a flag on Newton offset the penalty.
The NFL admitted Marshall’s hit, in which he planted his feet before launching with his helmet directly into Newton’s, should’ve been penalized. ESPN’s Ed Werder reported that another source indicated to him that Marshall would likely face a standard fine as well.
The Carolina Panthers (0-1) look to get their first win of the season in their home opener against the San Francisco 49ers (1-0) on Sunday. I leave my coverage just to try to hit him. As seen clearly on instant replay video, Marshall launched his body at Newton and made helmet-to-helmet contact.
Taking the high road is commendable, and letting us make this a big deal instead of arguing for yourself is a smart play. “If they are going to sit in there, in the offseason especially, and have these rally cries about player safety, player safety, but they’re not going to do anything about it on the field, then it is just lip service”, Kalil said. “Whatever Coach asks me to do I’m going to do it to win football games”.
Stewart was fined for roughing the QB in the final minute of Denver’s 21-20 win. They were targeting me. Quarterback Cam Newton was roughed up by the vaunted Wade Phillips’ defense, but still managed to play well regardless.
Following the game, Stewart said he and the Denvers would continue playing hard defensively.
Newton’s father, Cecil Newton, said the family was “grossly disturbed” by the repeated shots his son absorbed in Week One.
It was a tricky call because it was a one-point game and requiring the NFL MVP to sit out a play at that juncture could have decided the game. “It was like, ‘if only I had this play back”.
National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell admitted that a couple of the hits in the season’s opening game on Thursday night had “not been legal” and action has now been taken against two of the guilty parties. “I’ll be getting a letter”.
The latest two fines, coupled with cornerback Bradley Roby’s ,309 fine for a hit against the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason, brings the Broncos’ total money lost in fines to $66,849.

Newton said he felt “unbelievable” physically, adding that no National Football League player ever feels 100 percent after a game. But that’s understandable. Sometimes I’ve been hit and they have been called.
