Broncos trim roster but 1 cut already hurts

The Denver Broncos chose to release Sanchez as they set their final roster for the 2016 season but the Dallas Cowboys acted quickly to snatch up the Sanchize.

Mark Sanchez’s time with the Broncos is over.

However, by Week 4 of the preseason Thursday night, Sanchez was glued to the bench, with second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian already named the Week 1 starter of the regular season, while rookie Paxton Lynch played the whole game.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday how Dallas plans on signing Sanchez after the veteran quarterback failed to earn a roster spot as a member of the Broncos.

The release of Sanchez, who is expected to sign with the Cowboys, saved the Broncos at least $3.5 million in cap space (could be more with offsets) and a 2017 seventh-round draft pick that was dangled in the trade with Philadelphia earlier this year. Sanchez’s release cleared him to join any team.

So four days later, the Cowboys have an agreement with Sanchez.

The Broncos later made another move involving a quarterback by signing Austin Davis to a one-year contract.

While the Broncos are entering the season with a lot of unanswered questions at the quarterback position, the Cardinals are set with Carson Palmer, who was an MVP candidate a year ago.

The Broncos also cut running back Ronnie Hillman, their leading rusher last season with 863 yards.

Peyton Manning retired a month after the Super Bowl and longtime backup Brock Osweiler bolted to Houston 48 hours later when free agency opened.

Sanchez didn’t play at all in the Broncos’ final two preseason games.

It might not have been good enough to keep him on the Arizona Cardinals’ roster, but quarterback Matt Barkley might have done enough to get him a look elsewhere after his performance Thursday night in a 38-17 preseason victory over the Denver Broncos.

In the preseason, however, Sanchez proved ineffective and unimpressive while Trevor Siemian would go on to win the starting job. He’s thrown 86 touchdowns and 84 interceptions in 75 games.

The salary and the Cleveland Browns’ asking price kept the Cowboys from pulling off a trade for veteran quarterback Josh McCown after Moore went down August 2 with a broken fibula. Instead, it’s the preseason finale as the teams get ready to start the 2016 National Football League season as two of the top Super Bowl contenders.
