Broncos turn to Siemian as starting quarterback

It was assumed Mark Sanchez would have a breezy run to the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback job.

Trevor Siemian was named the Denver Broncos starting quarterback Monday.

Siemian closed the deal Saturday night with his performance in the Broncos’ preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Against the Rams last night, Siemian was 10 of 17 for 122 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT.

It wasn’t a ideal performance by any means, but the Denver Broncos appear to have their starting quarterback for the regular season barring a new development in the final week of the preseason. To name a few, Marc Bulger was a 6 round selection in 2000, Matt Hasselbeck was a 6 rounder in 1998, Ryan Fitzpatrick went in the 7 round in 2005 (250 overall coincidentally), and of course, as we hinted at when Siemian was drafted, 6 rounder and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. Siemian, a third-stringer in 2015, has the starting job for now. And that’s taking into account his advanced age and declining physical ability and performance in what turned out to be his 18th and last National Football League season.

A second-year quarterback who has never thrown a pass in a regular season game will replace Peyton Manning. And sometimes teams get too caught up in a QB’s physical ability, and likewise end up selecting a flop. With regard how this affects the status of Mark Sanchez, the coaching staff seems to simply be giving the younger guys more reps to make up for their lack of experience in the gridiron.

But progress is progress, and considering the circumstances, the fact that Lynch played the entire second half of Saturday’s win, rather than Sanchez getting a single snap, says a lot about Kubiak’s opinion of the rookie. I’ll take my time here and do it the right way.

Before you get all hot and bothered, Gary Kubiak hasn’t officially said anything nor has he tipped his hand. Gets a bad break on the “go” ball and comes right back and goes down the field.

“Every week just trying to get better, really”, Goff said when asked if he feels pressure to be ready by the start of the regular season.

Merely good is likely enough at quarterback for the Broncos to continue winning in 2016. Siemian also started the Broncos’ second preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. At the same time, I have a lot of things going on.
