Broncos’ Von Miller signs record $114.5 million deal

According to several reports, the Broncos have upped the guaranteed money for Miller to $70 million in a six-year contract. The outside linebacker received $23 million at signing and will earn $61 million over the first eight months of the blockbuster deal that makes him the highest-paid player outside of quarterbacks in National Football League history.

NEW YORK – The New York Jets have signed Muhammad Wilkerson to a five-year contract extension, beating Friday’s deadline after which the Pro Bowl defensive end would have had to play this season under the franchise tag amount of $15.7 million. “This is something I really wanted – to stay with the Denver Broncos”, Miller said.

It was reported earlier on Friday that the two sides were closing in on a lucrative six-year deal. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who recently signed his own deal, will be getting $87 million guaranteed.

“Going forward, we expect great things from Von not only on the field but with the responsibility he has as a leader on the team”, Elway said. But Miller is worth it. Von had to get fair value for his body of work with the organization, and this deal seems fair.

Miller had 35 tackles and 11 sacks in 16 games last season. That being said, the Broncos eventually caved to his demands on more guaranteed money, and for good reason.

Miller, 27, was unsurprisingly hit with the franchise tag in March, preventing him from reaching free agency.

However, Miller also told comedian Chelsea Handler on her show that he was hoping for a positive resolution with the Broncos, who drafted him second overall in 2011.

He was absolutely dominant last season, and was the single most important player for the Broncos during their Super Bowl championship run.

The franchise tag for kickers this season is $4.5 million, which Tucker would be playing for if the two sides are unable to get a long-term deal done by Friday. Miller had been tagged as the Bronco’s franchise player, a term that he didn’t want to be associated with.

Miller is haggling to get more guarantees in his deal, and most of the approximately $39.8 million that Denver did guarantee in its most recent offer was spread over two years. That salary was well below market value for a player of Miller’s caliber, after he racked up 60 sacks in his first five seasons.
