He finished the day with just 35 yards on 5-of-20 passing, four interceptions, two sacks and an nearly unheard-of zero passer rating before being benched late in the third quarter.

West’s touchdown with 11:23 remaining in the fourth quarter put the Chiefs (4-5) up 29-0 before the Broncos finally got touchdowns from Hillman, a 1-yard run, and Andre Caldwell, a 7-yard pass from Osweiler with 1:45 remaining. The throw brought Manning to 71,840 passing yards in his career.

The 39-year-old could also break Favre’s record of 186 career victories for a starting quarterback, should the Broncos win in Denver.

The Broncos’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs was paused to acknowledge Manning’s record, but the timing of the record-breaking moment was awkward. While quarterback Peyton Manning and the Broncos’ offense have struggled at times this year, the Broncos are still capable of striking at any time. He spent his first 14 years in the league with Indianapolis, where he won a Super Bowl as a member of the Colts. Coming into Sunday, Manning had nine touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

It started from the first series of the game, when Manning sailed his first pass attempt down the seam, into double coverage, where it was intercepted by Chiefs rookie cornerback Marcus Peters.

Rough first half for Manning on Sunday.

The quarterback suffered a sprained foot last week and suited up only as an emergency back-up – only to be called on during the first quarter after an ankle injury to Landry Jones.

So when asked this week the biggest lesson they took from that game, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that multiple defensive players echoed the very same thing.

For the Chiefs, Smith has 106 yards passing, no touchdowns. Numerous Chiefs-Broncos recent games have been close and come down to the last play.

There were no flashes of Manning’s former greatness, no near-misses on deep balls and few instances where you could say teammates had failed to help their quarterback.

To make matters worse, the Chiefs took advantage, running straight up several times in a five-play, 31-yard drive against the Broncos defense and finding little resistance.

However, he didn’t catch any of the four passes thrown his way and he left in the second half with a possible concussion. The Broncos haven’t been shut out since the Raiders held them scoreless on November 22, 1992….

This season, Manning has played poorly by his standards. New England’s Tom Brady, though, is lurking much more closely in third place with 168 wins entering his game today against the NY Giants. This could not be a better time for him to come back with Demarcus Ware out with an injury.
