Mr. Hutch, who was in his 50s, was shot dead on Poplar Row in North Strand at around 7.45 yesterday evening.

In apparent retaliation, police say at least four gunmen on Monday night broke into the Dublin home of Hutch’s brother Eddie and fatally shot the 59-year-old several times in the hallway.

Later today Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald will meet with the Garda Commissioner and senior officers.

David Byrne, 33, was killed and two others injured in the targeted attack, which has been linked to a gangland feud.

In a statement, the group said: “The Continuity IRA wish to make it clear that we did not have any involvement in Friday’s shooting at the Regency Hotel”.

A man was shot dead in Dublin on Monday, Irish police said, in a killing thought to be a reprisal attack for a shooting at a boxing event last week.

“Tonight’s fatal shooting in Dublin is another deplorable example of the ruthlessness of gangland criminals”.

Among those gunned down in Spain in September 2015 was Hutch’s nephew, Gary.

Gangsters apparently attempted to muddy the waters by issuing a statement to the BBC in Belfast, purportedly from the dissident republican Continuity IRA and claiming responsibility for the Regency attack.

Detectives are running a number of lines of inquiries including that the discriminate attack, which targeted Byrne and two others who remain in hospital, was an escalation of a dispute between drugs gangs based in Dublin and the Costa del Sol.

Some journalists and photographers from Irish newspapers were in the grounds of the hotel anticipating figures from Dublin’s criminal underworld would be present.

“The Gardaí will take all necessary steps to try to prevent further bloodshed but we have to recognise the challenges they face”.

Police in the Republic of Ireland have been criticised over the last few days for not having any intelligence about what was going to happen on Friday, even though various media outlets heard that something might happen.

The latest shooting has been condemned by Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams, who said it had “brought further fear and intimidation to the streets” of the Irish capital.
