Brother suspected in murder of Pakistan model Qandeel Baloch

The law enforcement agencies, who had arrested internet celebrity Qandeel Baloch’s brother Waseem from Dera Ghazi Khan on charges of murdering his own sister, produced the suspect before a local magistrate in Multan. What was even worst than the news of her death was her brother killing her in the name of “honour”.

He further said that although he was a drug addict, he was in his senses when he murdered her. He said that he doesn’t need a lawyer since he has no regrets for what he has done, said the report.

Baloch became a celebrity through pictures and videos that toed the line of propriety for women, whose rights are already deeply circumscribed in the conservative country.

Earlier this month, Ms Baloch sought protection from the government, saying she was receiving anonymous death threats. She posted recently she was “trying to change the typical orthodox mindset of people who don’t wanna come out of their shells of false beliefs and old practices”.

“Qandeel’s brothers had asked her to quit modeling”, her family said, according to the Express Tribune.

They said her body was not discovered until Saturday morning. “He had serious reservations regarding her pictures being circulated on social media”, Muhammad Azeem told reporters. “He had escaped after strangling Qandeel”. Her latest social media message had her promising the Pakistan cricket team that if he won their match against India, she would strip for him.

“Ms Baloch, dubbed by some Pakistan’s Kim Kardashian, rose to fame in 2014 when a video of her pouting at the camera and asking “How em looking?” went viral”.

Model Qandeel Baloch has been laid to rest in Dera Ghazi Khan after her funeral prayers were offered in Shah Sadar Din area on Sunday. While there was no nudity in her social-media posts, critics said her commentary, poses and clothes were inappropriate, overly sexual and violated Pakistani and Islamic norms.

No help was provided and the Interior Ministry has not commented on her death.

She had said her life was in danger and that she was being threatened via calls on her mobile number and that she did not have security measures installed in her home, the paper said.

Qandeel was a media sensation, bold in her videos and considered quite controversial in the country.
