A family spokesman says a cousin of Chicago Bulls NBA star Dwayne Wade was fatally shot August 25, while pushing a baby in a stroller on the city’s South Side.

In a case that has emerged as a talking point in the US presidential race, Darwin Sorrells Jr, 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, are facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Nykea Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four, police said.
The slaying has become a touchstone for political controversy and broader discussion of gun violence in Chicago.

Frustrated by the continued violence, Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson said it’s time to get serious about sentencing repeat offenders.

Aldridge was shot in the head and arm around 3:30 p.m. on Friday as she pushed her newborn baby in a stroller outside of Dulles School for Excellence on Chicago’s South Side.

Police reports say the Sorrells were attempting to shoot another person, but the bullet struck Aldridge, who was pushing a child in a stroller on the sidewalk.
