Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne has stunned WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev with a 10th round TKO to give Australia its first world heavyweight title in the history of boxing.

The Australian, who is managed by Ricky Hatton, was knocked down in the sixth round but floored Uzbekistan’s Chagaev with a big right.

Browne advanced to 24-0, 21 KOs while Chagaev dropped to 34-3-1, 21 KOs.

Although Tyson Fury, the WBA “Super” heavyweight title-holder, is the real and legitimate champion (even among the WBA’s slew of paper champions), Browne gains a tremendous lift in stock, and may become a powerbroker of sorts in the division.

He pinged the champion with jabs through the early rounds and landed the occasional right hand.

The next thing you know, Browne finished off Chagaev with a flurry of shots when he got up from the knockdown. “I obviously got rocked by something silly with his left hand, but I think I came back quite well”, Browne told AAP.

The Age reported that Browne “caught Chagaev with a crunching right to the head inside the last minute of the round, depositing the champion on the canvas.

Editor’s note: Lucas Browne now faces a mandatory contest against Fres Oquendo before a shot at the victor of the semi-finals between Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko, Luis Ortiz and Alexander Ustinov.

“It (the win) does really put the cherry on top”, said Browne.

“It moves me into better positions for bigger fights, bigger money fights”.

Martial arts are a key part of Kadyrov’s image as a strongman leader. “The Cannon” first challenged for a world title in 1998, when he was stopped in five rounds by Lennox Lewis, but did win the WBO belt in 2006, scoring a stunning 12th round stoppage of Siarhei Liakhovich. This was the southpaw’s second defense. Browne’s manager Matt Clark stated that he’s looking to stage that fight in Australia. “He was trailing in the fight”. For Briggs to confront Browne and ask him for a fight in his home country, it’s going to require that Briggs fly over.
