Browning throws 5 TDs passes, No. 18 Washington beats Idaho

“I did feel like in the first quarter that we were this close to getting that first first down and to then just getting rolling and getting into a rhythm”, Browning said. “We decided that when we step on the field we’re going to be the judge, prosecutor and executioner on that field”. “We came off that field more confident, and it carried over into our next game (Texas State)”.

With Idaho and Washington meeting at 5:00PM ET today, will the two teams score enough points to push the score over the total for bettors?

The No. 8 Washington Huskies will look to continue their rise up the rankings with a win against the Idaho Vandals on Saturday at Husky Stadium.

On the offensive end, Washington quarterback Jake Browning was unstoppable, throwing five touchdown passes.

Idaho’s defense stifled the Washington offense for the remainder of the half and looked poised to tie things up but wideout Trent Cowan fumbled when he was hit hard by Husky safety Jojo McIntosh and linebacker Azeem Victor was there to recover the ball at the one yard line.

Browning was pulled midway through the third quarter with the game no longer in question.

Browning provided the bulk of the Huskies offense with 294 yards on 23-of-28 passing. He did not throw an interception.

The Vandals (1-1) kept it in reach in the first quarter. Vea finished with 1 1/2 sacks.

Washington finished the game with four sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Linehan finished with 187 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-29 passing for the Vandals.

“We got whooped”, Idaho coach Paul Petrino said.

Sophomore quarterback Gunnar Amos made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter for the Vandals.

“I just thought in order for us to win it, we’re going to have to keep the ball and stay on the field”, Petrino said. Idaho did win the game 20-17, but came nowhere closing to covering as a 14.5-point home favorite. UW linebacker Keishawn Bierria recovered at Idaho’s 21-yard line, and Browning scrambled out of the pocket and threw a touchdown pass to Pettis on the next play.

After rattling off 13 consecutive completions, Browning led the Huskies on one last scoring drive before the break.

“We started to run more of a quicker offense in the second quarter with no huddle and everything kind of clicked”, Pettis said. Myles Gaskin has rushed for just 124 yards through two games after being thought of as a fringe Heisman Trophy candidate before the season.

By the time the Vandals finally did get on the scoreboard, they trailed by 42 points in the third quarter, and a sizable portion of the announced crowd of 60,678 had departed Husky Stadium in pursuit of more interesting affairs.

The defense held Idaho to only 14 points, the first of which were scored almost 40 minutes into the game.

NOTES: Idaho, of the Sun Belt Conference, received a reported payout of $825,000 for the game.

Idaho (1-0) is beginning a two-week stretch of playing schools from its neighbouring state. Their Pac-12 opener is at Arizona Sept. 24. Washington should handle them without too much of a scare and in the process get plenty of 2nd and 3rd string reps in, but there’s a reason Idaho is considered a team that could potentially go to a bowl for the first time in a few years (2009?).
