Browns fans burn Johnny Manziel jerseys following release

In a move that was expected two days ago, the Browns officially waived Manziel on Friday.

While Manziel was an average quarterback on the field, it was his off the field actions that helped the Browns, and possibly the rest of the National Football League to sour on the one-time star.

“I’d like to thank the Browns for the opportunity they gave me”, Manziel said in a statement released by his publicist to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

“I will always remember the support I received from the organisation, my team-mates and especially the fans”.

In two seasons with the Browns, Manziel played in 15 games with eight starts. The team at first stood by him, but soon decided they’d had enough.

The Browns still owe Manziel guaranteed base salaries in 2016 and 2017 of $1,169,872 and $1,004,125, respectively.

Manziel remained down on the field before being walked to the bench, and later, the locker room with a towel over his head.

Is Manziel the biggest bust of the new era?

Manziel, who did as much partying as playing during two drama-filled seasons with the Browns, was waived Friday.

The NFL is also investigating him.

On Feb. 25, Dallas police referred their domestic violence case against him to a grand jury, which will exam evidence against Manziel.

The following week, Manziel watched the majority of a 17-13 loss to the Panthers from the visiting team sideline at Bank of America Stadium after suffering a hamstring injury late in the first half.

And now that he’s no longer with the Browns, Manziel has other issues to handle. Manziel has completed 147 of 258 passes (57 percent) with seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and a career passer rating of 74.4.
