Browns on third starting QB as McCown out with injury

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown will miss Week 3 and possibly more with a shoulder injury.

The veteran quarterback had an up-and-down game in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, passing for 260 yards with two touchdowns but also two interceptions in the 25-20 loss.

McCown, who is considered week-to-week, was hurt Sunday in his first start in place of Robert Griffin III.

The Ravens are eager for Dumervil and rookie running back Kenneth Dixon (strained medial collateral ligament in left knee) to return, but at least they’re not dealing with the severity of injuries that the Browns are wading through. He will be the 26th quarterback to start for Cleveland since 1999.

Quarterback Cody Kessler #5 of the Cleveland Browns passes during the third quarter against the Chicago Bears at FirstEnergy Stadium during a preseason game on September 1, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.

“It’s a physical game and you always have to be ready”, Kessler said.

Jackson said Cleveland’s front office will consider signing an experienced QB, and there are some available free agents including Michael Vick, Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Flynn, and T.J. Yates.

The scene was reminiscent of last season, when McCown tried to play through broken ribs.

“He is one of the toughest human beings I’ve seen play in a long time”, Jackson said. “Maybe not to to this degree anyplace I’ve been”, Jackson said.

For now, the starting job belongs to Kessler, who warmed up twice on the sideline in case McCown couldn’t continue.

McCown did retreat to the locker room, but came back out.

Jackson laughed Monday when reminded about his comment. “If that did happen, I had the mindset of going in as the starter”. “We’ll see what that statement was all about”. Last week I got more reps and I felt more comfortable getting to go in with the offense, instead of doing the scout team the whole time. “I have a dad and an older brother who get up and go to work and sometimes they don’t feel great and they go. So, for me, it’s those things – and just knowing the window for me right now”. “It’s kind of a next-man-up mentality and I prepared as hard as I could all week”.
