Browns to start rookie QB Kessler at Miami

Their quarterbacks falling fast, the Browns needed to find a veteran with experience.

But in Week 3 of his rookie season?

Quarterback Josh McCown, who injured his shoulder Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, will not start when the Cleveland Browns travel to Miami to face the Dolphins, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. It would be nice to see Kessler survive the game physically and a real bonus to see him be effective. Tight end Dennis Pitta got quality chunk plays too, and had led the team with 102 big yards.

Things went from worse to devastating when McCown suffered a left shoulder injury in a disastrous 25-20 home-opening loss to the rival Ravens after the Browns put up 20 points in the first quarter. The 37-year-old McCown was filling in for starter Robert Griffin III, who broke a bone in his left shoulder in the opener.

It would also mark the second time during the past four seasons Baltimore would have averaged less than 100 rushing yards per game for an entire season.

“We had Owen (Daniels) a couple of years ago, we had Dennis before that”, Harbaugh said.

As of Sunday, the Browns will have started five different quarterbacks in five games dating back to last season, with Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis starting the final two games of 2015. Coach Hue Jackson announced the team will be going with its third-round pick from earlier this year this week against the Miami Dolphins.

The Browns would prefer to bring Kessler along more slowly, but that luxury is gone. His two interceptions were most likely the difference in this game, though. “There are some throws I know he wishes he had back, but at the same time, I think he played as well and as hard as he could”.

Jackson added: “We’re not getting dragged under, I promise you that”. But that’s the nature of the sport.

Four incomplete passes wrapped around just one run that went for 15 yards before punting is perplexing.

Whitehurst played in five games for the Colts and Titans last season.

Whitehurst comes to town to serve as Kessler’s backup, but with how fast the Browns are going through quarterbacks in 2016, he may see some playing time sooner than later.

Erving was released from the hospital following an overnight stay.

“(John) Greco will go over to center and (Alvin) Bailey will move in at guard”, Jackson said.
