Brush Fire Near Santa Clarita Prompts Evacuations

Fire crews Saturday battled a 700-acre brush fire burning near the 5 Freeway that forced evacuations in the Stevenson Ranch area.

Pushed by winds gusting up to 25 miles per hour, the blaze quickly grew to at least 450 acres.

L.A. County Fire Department authorities note that the fire is now at 0% containment.

By 4 p.m., officials estimated the fire had charred between 450 and 600 acres, she said.

More than 200 firefighters are on the scene, as are four helicopters that are making “water drops”. The Sage Fire was said to have started near Sagecrest Circle and The Old Road.

An inmate firefighter received a minor injury, according to county authorities. Other areas along Old Stone Way south of Pico Canyon Road were also being evacuated, including Southern Oaks Drive between Greensbrier Drive and Meadow Lane, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Santa Clarita Station.

There were no estimates on how many residents were being evacuated.

United States Forest Service firefighters from the Angeles National Forest are assisting the firefighting effort.
