Brussels hit by blasts

The explosions come four days after a counter-terrorism raid in Brussels led to the capture of Paris attacks suspect Saleh Abdeslam Friday. These teams have been deployed to crowded areas and transit locations around the city out of an abundance of caution to provide police presence and public reassurance as we closely follow the developing situation overseas.

Passengers were led onto the tarmac and the crisis center urged people not to come to the airport.

“What we feared has happened, ” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said at a press conference Tuesday, adding that authorities are anxious there will be more attacks.

Witnesses told RTL that at least one of the two explosions took place in the airport’s departure hall. Two blasts hit the global airport; another struck a metro station.

The metro operator later said the service was being closed down. Those numbers have not been confirmed by police or the government. The cause of the explosion is still unclear.

The nation’s terror alert has been raised to its maximum level in the wake of explosions at the airport.

The airport is completely shutdown, as is all transit in the Belgian capital.

It’s also reported that shots were fired before the blasts, airport officials were kept busy as they evacuated passengers and workers.

Also, Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov told news agencies that authorities would re-evaluate security at the country’s airports. All flights have been diverted.

At least 13 people were dead and 35 were wounded, local media said.
