The two men arrested in Brussels a few days ago, named as 30-year-old Said S and 27-year-old Mohammed K, both Belgian nationals, can be held for another month, a judge ruled on Thursday.

Belgian authorities have freed three people after questioning them about a suspected plot to carry out extremist attacks in Brussels over the holidays. They charged him with terror offences.

The man was detained Wednesday following a search in the Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels, where some of the Paris attackers lived, including suspected ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

“In these circumstances, we can’t check everyone”, Mayeur said.

‘It was, I understand well, a delicate, hard decision for the mayor to take, ‘ Michel said.

In at least two capitals – Turkey’s Ankara and Belgium’s Brussels – officials also said they had disrupted plots to strike at New Year’s celebrations that stretch into today.

Officials said the plot revealed on Tuesday was not directly linked to the wave of bombings and shootings on a Paris concert venue, bars, restaurants and the national stadium. Bazarouj’s family is considered radicalized, and one of his brothers reportedly left for Syria about a year ago to join the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.

Celebrations in Germany took on a sombre note when police warned of a possible terror attack and evacuated two train stations in Munich an hour before midnight on Thursday.

“We are ready”, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday in a press conference, calling his city “the best prepared city in the country to prevent terrorism and to deal with any event should it occur”.

New Year fireworks and festivities have been cancelled in the Belgian capital Brussels because of an alert.
