Bubba Watson doesn’t quite fit the Ryder Cup bill – for now

Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler were announced Monday by Davis Love III as two of his US captain’s picks.

However, on Monday the world No. 9 was given one of three wildcards by US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love for the clash with Europe at Hazeltine.

There is one remaining spot for the US Ryder Cup team and Love plans to make the announcement on the 25th of September, after the completion of the FedExCup Play-off Finale in Atlanta.

However, Love says that the final spot won’t automatically be filled by the American who performs best at East Lake. Many choices who would be great on the USA team.

The U.S. has spent two years planning and strategizing in hopes of turning the tide, and Love’s first three captain’s picks lean heavily on experience as they try to end the skid. “We went through a lot of scenarios and talked about a lot of great players”.

Holmes joins Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker on the 12-man team. Hopefully Love’s picks don’t underperform, losing the fourth straight Ryder Cup.

Europe has won seven of the past 10 Ryder Cups. At the spiritual home of the Ryder Cup, Jacklin hosted an impressive array of golfing stars and celebrities for a unique event to raise money for Rainbows Children’s Hospice.

Love is as conservative a thinker as his North Carolina background suggests, so there were no real surprises – Bryson DeChambeau, anybody? – though he did leave out Bubba Watson, who is the seventh-ranked player in the world.

“It’s been one of my main goals all year to get on this team, and to get that call from Davis was just a very exciting moment”, Holmes said.

Watson isn’t the only player who may well warrant a pick.

‘After what happened in Switzerland I just feel I’m playing well enough to win golf tournaments again, so that’s why I got here on Monday to give myself the best possible chance, ‘ said the 43-year-old.

Bubba silence: You have to be careful these days trying to parse the utterings of Love, who noted he spent time with famously lock-jawed New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Davis Love III is rounding out his team. Kuchar said. “That would be incredible”.

Anyone who saw Watson in Rio, supporting every American team he was able to go see compete, knows he’ll have himself right for the Ryder Cup.
