Buckeyes are 1st unanimous AP preseason No. 1

The Associated Press released its preseason poll Sunday afternoon, and the Buckeyes were a unanimous No. 1 according to the 61 voters. Ohio State was the unanimous No. 1 choice as the top-ranked team in this season’s AP preseason poll.

TCU, Alabama, Baylor and Michigan State rounded out the top five. What aren’t they seeing going into the 2015 season, and what are the big things to take away from the preseason poll?

USC COACH APOLOGIZES: Southern California’s Steve Sarkisian apologized Sunday for his behavior and profane language at a team event the night before.

No. 20 Wisconsin is the only other Big Ten entry in the poll. The top four are the same in the Coaches and AP preseason polls – Ohio State, TCU, Alabama and Baylor. It marked the fourth time the Sooners have been ranked out of the AP’s preseason top 10 in Bob Stoops’ 17-season coaching tenure. The SEC has only three teams in the top 10 rankings, which in itself is a departure from the way rankings have shown up in the past few seasons. Even in 2013, when Alabama won back-to-back National Championships, the Tide only received 58 of 60 possible first-place votes. They will open atop the polls for the eighth time in school history and the first time since 2006. It is BU’s highest preseason ranking ever, after previously having been ranked as high as seventh before the start of the 1957 season.

Ohio State, the defending national champion, is No. 1.

Preseason rankings in college football are useless, some say. Mississippi State and Texas A&M also received votes but were unable to crack the top 25.

Boise State starter: Sophomore Ryan Finley will be the quarterback for No. 23 Boise State for its September 4 season opener against Washington.
