The Buckeyes became the first team in the 79-year history of the rankings to be named unanimous No. 1 after receiving all 61 first-place votes. Michigan State is ranked No. 5. With the plethora of talent that they have returning on both sides of the ball, many are expecting the Buckeyes to not only make it back into the College Football Playoff, but repeat as the national champions.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn’t like to use the word “defend”.
In 2013, Alabama, which had won two straight championships, received 58 of 60 first-place votes and defending champion Florida did the same in 2009.
Auburn was sixth followed by last year’s runner-up, Oregon, at seven and USC, Georgia and Florida State to round out the top 10. The SEC’s media has predicted the Vols to finish second in the SEC East behind Georgia, which is ranked No. 9 in the preseason AP Top 25.
Ohio State also led the preseason Amway Coaches Poll that was released on July 30. OSU, Michigan State, and Wisconsin at No. 20 were the only Big Ten schools ranked in the preseason.
