Bucks arena project still faces uncertainty

The full city council will review the proposal next Tuesday.

“If they want to take their ball home and open this up to a complete range of re-negotiations, that may not be the end of the world”.

Alderman Bob Bauman voted for the package but said his enthusiasm for the project has been curbed.

The committee decided that part of an adjacent street should not be closed 24/7 as a public plaza. The city’s package also includes a new parking ramp.

“There’s a variety of engineering and architectural modifications that can be made to 4th Street, which can accommodate special events, which can turn it into a plaza by night”.

“It is a great mistake for the city to vacate Fourth Street”, Bauman said. Bucks president Peter Feigin said the team and the city are not on the same page right now, but the Bucks plan more conversations with council members in the next few days. “I understand the Bucks’ positon but I’m astonished at the city’s position, that we would give away our power”.

As it stands, the agreement calls for 25 percent of the district’s new retail to be locally-owned.

The amendments were added during the committee’s discussion of the tax incremental financing development package for the proposed $500 million downtown arena project.

The committee proposed taking all of the naming rights revenue for the city, which is something that posed a serious problem for Bucks officials.
