Buffalo Bills cut troubled running back Karlos Williams

Last week it was the announcement of a change in the stadium name. A franchise that has embarrassed itself and frustrated its loyal fan base by missing the playoffs for 16 consecutive years just continues to spin its wheels, seemingly stuck forever in a one step forward, two steps back mode of operation. He grew to 261 pounds at one point this offseason, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and has struggled to maintain his weight since arriving at training camp.

WHAT DO Dareus and Williams have in common?

The NFL announced in July that Williams is suspended for the first four games of the regular season for a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The decision to waive Williams is a change of heart for Ryan, who was asked earlier in August if the running back’s roster spot was in jeopardy.

“We support Marcel 100 percent”, Ryan said.

“The first preseason game we had things you could could off of and build from and I think we did the right things this game and we grew on things we didn’t do right last week”, Taylor added.

What did Whaley say about Williams?

If the Dolphins were to claim Williams off waivers, that would, in effect, complete a swap of fifth round running backs from the state of Florida between the two teams, as Buffalo signed Miami’s 2013 draftee, and former Florida Gator, Mike Gillislee, before the 2015 season. In light of that, why hold on to him? “We all know the kind of player Marcell is, and he’s a good person, too, but he’s got to make better choices, better decisions, and understand that it affects the whole football team and not just himself”.

Williams, whose listed weight on the Bills’ website was 230, was activated Monday from the non-football illness list and practiced this past week. “And the information was he wasn’t ready to play, and guys underneath him surpassed him”. The first-team defense – playing without Dareus, Kyle Williams, Lawson and Aaron Williams – held the Giants’ starters to 23 net yards on four possessions, the final three of which were three-and-outs. “What’s in the past is in the past and our focus will be on the men on this team”.

“He was so far out of reach for his goal that it was going to take a lot of time for him to get to where he needed to be”, Whaley said.

The argument in favor of Williams is that he’s an exceptionally talented player, but that argument loses some of its effectiveness with the Bills’ General Manager coming out and saying that the release was entirely due to performance.

Of course, Buffalo can’t give up on Dareus. But Williams was the Bills’ sacrificial lamb.
