In addition to playing cornerback, McKelvin handled kick and punt return duties for Buffalo.

The Bills veteran cornerback only managed to play in nine games during the 2015 regular season as he missed the beginning of the season with an ankle injury he suffered in 2014.

McKelvin follows Mario Williams, Boobie Dixon, Kraig Urbik and MarQueis Gray out the door this week as the Bills try to find a way to create enough room to tender their own restricted free agents, plus possibly get unrestricted free agent offensive guard Richie Incognito re-signed before he hits the open market Wednesday. The move will save the Bills $3.9 million and bring the team roughly million under the cap, per ESPN’s Mike Rodak.

NFL Network first reported that McKelvin was being released.

Rookie Ronald Darby graded out as one of the best cover men in the AFC last season and helped to make McKelvin expendable.

There is still maneuvering for Bills general manager Doug Whaley to do, as OvertheCap.com estimates the team has just over $1.5 million in cap space.

The Bills weren’t necessarily looking to release McKelvin when the offseason started.

McKelvin originally came to Buffalo as a first round pick as the 11th overall pick.

McKelvin worked his way into the starting lineup in 2010, was more of a nickel corner in 2011 and 2012, and then was a starter his next two years. Despite limited time, he picked off six passes in the last two years.
