Buffalo Bills’ Rex Ryan on dumping Greg Roman: ‘We need a change’

The Bills are 0-2 after losing to division rivals the Patriots and Jets in back to back weeks, and they fired their offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, on Friday following the team’s Thursday night loss to NY.

Tyrod Taylor had touchdown passes of 84 and 71 yards in Thursday night’s 37-34 loss against the New York Jets, but looked tentative and indecisive throughout the game.

Meanwhile, assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn is set to replace Roman as the Bills offensive coordinator when they host the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday, September 25, 2016.

In fact, during the interview after the game, Bills head coach Rex Ryan admitted that there was a mismatch during the game: the Jets offense against the Bills defense.

Ryan said the decision to fire Roman two games into the season was all his after the Bills’ 0-2 start.

Buffalo scored just seven points in its opener against the Baltimore Ravens. And even though that turned into 31 points (seven from the defensive side) and almost 400 yards of offense against the Jets, almost 40 percent of that came on two plays.

Roman, who coordinated an offense that led the league in rushing last year, was sacked with two years left at $2 million per year. Ryan said the decision came from him, though ownership was okay with the move, per Matthew Fairburn of New York Upstate. The rest of the evening the Bills offense was relatively stagnant.

The report also states that Roman privately told at least one person after last season that he thought Ryan was a “buffoon” and “being affiliated with him wasn’t going to be good for his career”. When some noticed that the Pegula family that owns the Bills never bothered to appear in the postgame locker room Thursday night, some wondered whether Ryan would be sent packing Friday, but it was Roman who lost his job.

It is not the usual circumstance to make coaching changes during the National Football League season, especially just two games into the 2016 season. Our biggest thing is we need to find different ways to win ballgames. But you’d assume he’d be in a meeting with his players and the owners of the team.

Taylor went 8-6 as a first-time starter a year ago. Roman was relieved of his duties by head coach Rex Ryan just 18 games into his tenure with Buffalo.

The Bills announced Roman’s departure and Lynn’s promotion through their official Twitter account. Roman’s unit responded by rolling up 31 points and almost 400 yards of offense last night, but it wasn’t enough due to one of the worst defensive performances in franchise history.
