Bugs swarm Burning Man playa

Home Depot is cashing in on the annual Burning Man festival, where 65,000 hipsters and tech glitterati flock to the Nevada desert for music, art, drugs, and a frenzy of togetherness. “They may do some biting, if you will… but they’re plant feeders”. What folks are saying about Burning Man’s creepy bug-saturated desert site is the real deal. Nicely perhaps not all the rumors, however the bugs are actual. “They chew. They crawl throughout you”. “And also you usher in a shiny mild or shiny lights and if there are lots of people”, the bugs can arrive.

Burning Man is an event held annually where folks get together in the middle of the desert and the grand finale of the festivities is burning a man made out of wood in effigy. They’re tiny, so it’s not as grisly as it sounds, but it feels like a bug bite and leaves a welt.

Different footage from the preparation for pageant, which begins subsequent week, present giant inexperienced bugs coating tire wheels and different surfaces. The recent rains might be behind the infestation.

Rich Pollack, a public health entomologist and senior environmental public health officer at Harvard University, said he thinks the insects shown in pictures are stink bugs and that the smaller flying insects are a kind of seed bug.

He says every year when organizers put up large shop lights on long telescopic poles bugs swarm to them.

“When you have the rain event in the desert, two weeks or so later the desert blooms and the bugs will move in and become active”, he said. But, he says you can prepare by bringing fine netting and using dim lights at the festival.

The bugs have no interest in eating people as their diet consists of plants, but it takes a sample bite for the bugs to realize the party goers are not the leafy menu they are searching for.

Tom Price, one of the founders of Burners Without Borders and the executive director of Black Rock Solar, said: ‘Spoon was a deeply generous man, with a huge heart, who gave so much love and care though his food.

“They’re not very long-lived”, he defined. “When these crops begin to brown up, they’re going to disperse or die”.
