Petrov made 186 league appearances for the claret and blue outfit and he could once again pull on the shirt as it was revealed he would join the Villa first team for pre-season training.

Petrov became club captain for Villa, and played 218 times for the club in his first spell.

And new Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has given his blessing for the former club captain to join the squad at their training camp in Austria.

Petrov will also travel to Austria on a pre-season training camp with the squad but has not yet been offered a deal.

Petrov, who has won 105 caps for his country, has not played top flight football in four years.

Stillian Petrov returns to Aston Villa this summer, three years after the 36-year-old underwent treatment for leukemia.

The Bulgarian worldwide made over 200 appearances for the club before being forced into retirement due to his battle against Leukaemia.

Last season he trained with Villa’s U21s to build up his fitness and he is now recording running times similar to that of a first-team player.
