Bullied deaf student overwhelmed by support, still wants to transfer schools

OMAHA, Nebraska- A high school in Omaha, Nebraska, is investigating claims of bullying after someone dumped a student’s belongings into the toilet.

“The students who stole the backpack were unaware of the contents of the backpack or that the owner of the backpack was hard of hearing”, Burke High Principal Steven Scraggs wrote in a letter that went home to parents Tuesday.

Hernandez says he’s received much support from both close friends and people all over the country since KMTV first reported the story.

According to the station, school administrators told Alex’s mother that the students who took the backpack were eventually identified and that one has been suspended.

Staff even searched the school grounds but had no luck.

Hernandez, 16, is unable to hear his teachers without his implant and the battery that goes with it, KETV said. Or anyone for that matter’.

Of particular concern was that an English paper he had been working on was in his bag and was ruined when it was emptied into the toilet.

“I was very upset because I know I work really hard on my project and homework because I just want to make my mom to be happy and know that I did a good job on the homework”, said Hernandez.

Hernandez does not know either of the students.

“I just want to talk to them; I don’t want to fight them”, she said. “It made me feel like I am not alone”, says Hernandez. “And talk to their parents about them so they can tell them they need to teach them the right thing to do”, she said.

“We are aware of the situation that occurred at Burke earlier this week”. School officials are reportedly investigating the incident.

The situation was an isolated incident.

OPS strives to provide a safe learning environment for all’. Though schools are continually taking steps to prevent bullying, it is still a problem. They surpassed their $800-goal in three days, with the final amount raised totaling $830.

Omaha Public Schools District released a statement on KMTV with regards to the Burke High School incident saying that they take such circumstances with the utmost seriousness.
