Burger King: One Direction, Buzzfeed spurred chicken fries

And now, Burger King is capitalizing on the spicy fast-food trend with its new “Fiery Chicken Fries”.

Burger King first introduced Chicken Fries (9 for $2.89) in 2005 – but they were removed from the menu in 2012.

While the move to bring back Chicken Fries may have been based on iffy evidence, it has paid off for Burger King.

The company pointed to a mention in a Buzzfeed post and a tweet by a One Direction member for generating conversation about chicken fries. “Think I just ate my body weight in chicken fries and sides owwwwww”.

Nonetheless, Payne’s tweet, which has been retweeted more than 94,000 times, led to plenty of fans discussing Chicken Fries in his mentions. That raises the possibility that Payne just left out a comma, and meant to say he ate chicken and fries – not chicken fries.

“We wanted to create something as spicy as sh**, that it was so spicy that it may even offend you”, said Eric Hirschhorn, Burger King’s chief marketing officer for North America at an exclusive taste-test of the new product attended by TheStreet in New York City on August 6.

This newest contender may look and feel the same as Burger King’s popular Chicken Fries, which were added earlier this year as a regular menu item. In July, the company said that Chicken Fries helped drive second quarter same-store sales growth of 6.7 percent.

Since being taken over by investment firm 3G Capital, the chain has leaned heavily on its past for ideas.
