Burkina Faso’s former coup leader Gen. Gilbert Diendere took refuge at the Vatican’s compound in the country’s capital city after the army opened fire on his forces to force them to put down their arms.

“Negotiations are under way for his surrender to the authorities”, the government said on state television.
On Monday, Bassole, who is a presidential candidate, denied allegations that he supported Diendere, calling it a “demonisation campaign” against him.
In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Diendere said the RSP soldiers had not received the protections they initially were promised.
A recent coup in Burkina Faso by presidential guards led to 10 deaths and several injuries in the capital Ouagadougou.
Following Compaore’s removal past year, interim President Michel Kafando was appointed with the stated aim of supervising the country’s democratic transition.
The group drew worldwide condemnation for the move, with the French president threatening that “all those involved” in the coup would “face the consequences” if they do not lay down their arms.
Also yesterday, troops arrested Djibril Bassole, who served as foreign minister under Compoare and had been expected to run in the presidential elections which had been slated to take place on October 11, security sources told AFP. He stated he accepted the federal government’s choice to disband the RSP and had been looking for to defuse the stand-off on the regiment’s camp.
A few more weeks cant burn the cookies badly, suggested one leading Burkinabe politician who declined to be identified publicly for fear of reprisals for going against a popular demand.
He gave power back to the government following a deal brokered by regional leaders, and said the coup was a “mistake”.
The coup leader added that he was no longer at the barracks, without giving details. “There was no need for talking, just to attack (the RSP)”, a driver called Momune Sigue told AFP.

Ouagadougou’s global airport also shut on Tuesday. Its members mounted the coup, unhappy that Compaore supporters were barred from running in elections.
