Sankara’s murder is one of the most high-profile killings in Africa’s post-independence history and criminal charges could represent a breakthrough in a case that has haunted the West African country for decades.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse that Compaore, who is living in exile in the Ivory Coast, had been charged with an “attack” and “assassination”.
Remains thought to be those of Mr Sankara were exhumed earlier this year.
Paul Sankara, the younger brother of Thomas Sankara, said he hopes the government of Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara will extradite Compaore if he is in the country.
“I can confirm the warrant of arrest” for Compaore, said military tribunal director Col. Sita Sangare, adding he could not give more details.
OUAGADOUGOU – Burkina Faso has issued an global arrest warrant for ousted leader Blaise Compaore in connection with the murder of former president Thomas Sankara almost 30 years ago, judicial sources told Reuters on Monday.
Sankara and 12 of his supporters were killed during a 1987 bloody coup that brought Compaore to power.
But on Monday, a police lab in the southern French city of Marseille helping to investigate Sankara’s death said the “state of the remains” made it impossible to detect any DNA, according to family lawyer Benewende Stanislas Sankara, who is not related to the former president.
Bruno Kone, Ivory Coast’s government spokesman, said, “The government has not been notified”. They include General Gilbert Diendere, who led a failed coup in September.
The preliminary results had indicated that Sankara’s remains were shot by bullets. “The people of Burkina Faso, especially the youth and civil society will work until they get the truth and justice for Thomas Sankara”, Sankara said.

The probe into Sankara’s death was launched five months after Compaore was ousted as president in a popular uprising in October 2014.
