Burns, Khawaja power Australia in second test
Australia tightened its grip on the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, declaring its first innings closed on 551 for 3 before reducing West Indies to 91 for 6 by stumps on the second day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday (December 27).

Skipper Steve Smith was unbeaten on 32, with Adam Voges on 10.
So far in the series, Australia have amassed 776 runs for the loss of just five wickets as the home side looked to build another formidable first innings total.
Burns and Warner already have three partnerships of at least 100 runs and selectors are also looking ahead to the two-Test tour of New Zealand in February.
The part-time off-spinner and Jerome Taylor removed dangermen Joe Burns (128) and Usman Khawaja (144) respectively in the final session on Saturday, giving the tourists something of a boost heading into day two.
With almost 12 000 runs in first class cricket, Voges long appeared destined to end up on his nation’s roll-call of outstanding cricketers whose careers wind down with test dreams unfulfilled.
Two balls later, Khawaja joined his partner on three figures – three hundreds in three straight Tests for the 29-year-old – when he made the most of a misfield at square leg and grabbed a quick single.
Australia won the opener emphatically in Hobart and took a big stride toward sealing the three-match series with a game in hand after being sent in to bat by West Indies captain Jason Holder. “I couldn’t have asked for a lot more on day one”.

Kraigg Brathwaite was on 17 with Rajendra Chandrika not out on 14.
Smith, recently crowned ICC cricketer of the year, nominated fielding as one area his side needed to improve on after walloping the West Indies by an innings and 212 runs. He batted for 312 minutes and hit 16 fours and a six. Opener David Warner was the only batsman not to score a century.
Burns was on 83, with Khawaja on 84 at the break, the Queensland pair having put on an unbroken stand of 164.

It will otherwise be an unchanged side for the showpiece Boxing Day Test with Australia favoured to retain the Frank Worrell trophy against the struggling tourists.

“The way things are going at the moment and being able to score runs, I probably go back to what happened during the Ashes and thinking about the tough times that I encountered then”.
