Russia’s Aniuar Geduev stunned defending Olympic and world champion Jordan Burroughs in the quarterfinals of the men’s freestyle wrestling tournament. Geduev defeated Burroughs by a score of 3-2, and as you can see in the GIF above, the match was a testy one. Despite a late surge by Burroughs, Geduev was able to weather the storm and move on to the next stage.
The match ended with Burroughs, atop Geduev, vainly trying to score the needed point or points, ending Burroughs’ hopes of becoming only the fourth United States of America wrestler to win multiple Olympic gold medals. Burroughs, who was visibly frustrated throughout the match, pushed the face of his counterpart away after one exchange on their feet.
It was only the third loss of Burroughs’ career and first since 2014. If Geduev makes the final, Burroughs will get a chance to enter the repechage, or consolation, bracket and wrestle for bronze. Burroughs declined to take questions after the match.

With today’s loss, Burroughs’s record in senior competition is 130-3.
