Authorities say an Arizona Department of Corrections bus carrying about 50 inmates has hit a semi-truck that had rolled over and blocked the lanes on Interstate 8.

DPS said 20 inmates and two staff members were injured in the crash.

Lee said officials received word at about 1:10 a.m. that the rig had rolled over on the interstate.

Every single prisoner was accounted for after the bus crash, according to Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Lamoreaux. Lee said several inmates were hurt in the crash, with injuries ranging from minor to serious. The Arizona Department of Public Safety did not have any details on the driver’s condition.

Authorities said uninjured inmates remained at the scene without incident and then were transported back to prison. They were returning from a work detail in Casa Grande.

The driver of semi-truck told state troopers he toppled his vehicle trying to avoid an animal that had darted onto the roadway, Graves said. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
