Bus Carrying College Students Overturns in Virginia, More Than 30 Injured

The bus, operated by Abbott Bus Lines of Roanoke, had 50 passengers and the driver onboard when the bus crashed about 7:15 p.m., police said.

Earlier this month, at least six people died after a charter bus hit a bridge abutment on Interstate 40 near Little Rock, Arkansas. The other 49 were students heading back to Radford and Virginia Tech from fall break, one parent told 8News.

Students returning to college were injured Sunday evening when a bus overturned in the Richmond area, according to media there.

Selma Taylor, an aunt of a Virginia Tech student involved, talked to her niece after the wreck. After the bus flipped, a vehicle hit the bus.

Kandace spent most of the night at Chippenham Hospital, as doctors ran tests, MRI’s, and X-Rays.

The incident is under investigation by the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety team, and the National Transit Safety Board has been notified, Virginia State Police said.

According to Geller, the crash occurred in the northern part of Chesterfield, as the bus was going around a curve on a ramp onto southbound Chippenham Parkway from Powhite Parkway. Drivers were advised to expect delays and asked to use an alternate route. The crash shut down the exit ramp for hours but has since reopened.

More than 30 people were injured on Sunday when a bus transporting college students after the Thanksgiving holiday overturned on a Virginia highway, media reports said.

The spokesperson for the company also issued a statement saying that Abbott Trailways is ensuring that everyone on the bus is accounted for, and their medical attention is covered.

The cause of the accident is under investigation and Abbott Trailways is again working with police to determine what happened.
