Bus with 50 inmates crashes in Arizona; inmates, driver hurt

PHOENIX A bus carrying 50 minimum-security prisoners slammed into an overturned semi-truck on Interstate 8 in Arizona early on Tuesday, seriously injuring the bus driver and two inmates, authorities said.

The bus driver was severely injured, and 12 to 13 inmates were transported to hospitals for treatment.

There was no immediate word on the extent of his injuries. DPS says several inmates were hurt in the crash but did not know the ext… All of them were transported to the hospital for the injuries they sustained in the crash.

According to DPS, all of the inmates stayed on the scene and helped direct traffic and performed first aid for those that were injured.

Lee said officials received word at about 1:08 a.m. that a semi-truck had rolled over on the interstate.

One lane is open in each direction of Interstate 8 east of Gila Bend following an overnight crash involving a prison transport bus and a semitruck.

It wasn’t immediately known where the bus was headed.

Westbound I-8 was closed at the state Route 84 interchange at mile 151.
