Jeb had vowed to fight on regardless of the outcome in SC, but he faced increasing pressure from within the Republican Party to drop out of the race, in the hope that Marco Rubio can consolidate enough non-Trump support to win the nomination.
He came a distant fourth in Saturday’s SC vote, which was won by billionaire estate mogul Donald Trump.
“Thank you, Nevada”, Clinton said in a victory speech.
Donald Trump is the projected victor of the South Carolina Republican primary, according to the Associated Press.
“Jeb Bush’s decision to drop out of the presidential race drew supportive reaction Saturday night from one Collier County supporter and local Republican Party leaders”.
The son and brother of the past two Republican presidents entered the race with all the signs of the classic front-runner: endorsements from other top officeholders, a massive campaign war chest and name-brand campaign consultants.
Most of the Bush family – including his brother, former President George W. Bush, and mother, Barbara Bush – joined him on the campaign trail in the days leading up to the primary.
While Kasich’s chief strategist John Weaver speculated only four candidates would remain in the race after the primary, the New York Times reported, Rubio said the race was down to three candidates.
The victories by Trump and Clinton solidified their positions as the front-runners to win their parties’ respective presidential nominations ahead of the November 8 election.
After a grim showing in New Hampshire, it looked as if his campaign was going to resemble a shooting star.
Cruz and Rubio are looking to be the alternative to Trump, as Trump is quickly becoming the GOP’s frontrunner. The win gives Clinton some much-needed momentum after a double-digit loss to Sanders in New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton beat back a strong challenge from Bernie Sanders in the Nevada caucuses.
